A Message from the Office of the Director of the GHS Cancer Center:
The Cancer Center of GHS is a large, regional referral center with comprehensive offerings for adult and childhood malignancies and hematologic disorders. As part of an academic medical center, it offers a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art cancer services while serving as a leading center for cancer research as well as undergraduate and post-graduate medical education. Complementing the diverse treatment options of our NCI-designated CCOP has been the evolving phase one program initiated in 2004. This effort has expanded to include biorepository, cancer proteomics and genomics capabilities, while forging unique university and biotechnology partnerships. These efforts have culminated in the creation of the Institute for Translational Oncology Research as a major pillar of cancer research at GHS. This institute will strengthen patient options and enhance treatment availability to progressively solidify the GHS Cancer Center as a destination for patients and their families.

Clinical Trials
The GHS Cancer Center performs more than 100 clinical trials to give patients access to new or alternative therapies. Many of the trials are conducted through the ITOR Clinical Research Unit (CRU) as well as through the Greenville Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP) of Cancer Centers of the Carolinas.
Oncology Research
Basic research of cell biology, molecular biology, and development biology is conducted through Clemson Universitys onsite Biomedical Institute to discover new approaches to cancer prevention and treatment. Clemson Universitys Biomedical Institute is Upstate South Carolina's only basic science cancer research facility.
Oncology Rehabilitation
The GHS Cancer Center also offers a unique Oncology Rehabilitation Program, called Moving On, to assist patients with addressing the side effects of cancer and cancer treatments. The program helps decrease fatigue, increase strength, and improve quality of life.
Treatment Collaboration
In conjunction with Cancer Centers of the Carolinas, the GHS Cancer Center provides unique programs focused on advanced treatment and comprehensive care. The Oncology Multidisciplinary Center (MDC) was developed for disease specific, rapid comprehensive cancer consultation. The dedicated centers each meet one to two times weekly and include thoracic, breast, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, neuro oncology, and melanoma/sarcoma. The MDC is physically juxtaposed to the ITOR Clinical Research Unit, a propitious configuration for professional interchange, patient evaluation and trial accrual.
The Cancer Center's commitment to providing patients with exceptional care earned the facility the prestigious 2009 American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer (CoC) Outstanding Achievement Award as well as a 3-year accreditation with commendation from the CoC for outstanding adherence to standards of excellence in cancer care.
Cancer Centers of the Carolinas
In 2002, the oncologists of Cancer Centers of the Carolinas (CCC) and the Greenville Health System entered a collaboration to unite South Carolinas largest physician oncology group with the states largest hospital provider to create a premiere Cancer Center for the Southeast United States.
The 25 oncologists at CCC include medical oncology, radiation oncology and gynecologic oncology, and carry a nationally claimed reputation for excellence in cancer research under the Greenville CCOP. US Oncology provides management expertise for CCC and brings nationwide experience with over 1000 oncologists, as well as a Phase 1 network.
CCC is the largest referral source for the Institute for Translational Oncology Research with Jeff Edenfield, serving as medical director of ITOR of GHS.
Cancer Centers of the Carolinas Commitment to Translational Research:
Cancer care in the last decade has made many advances through clinical research via clinical trials or research studies. Clinical trials have resulted in new treatments and prevention options for cancer care. The oncologists of CCC are committed to ongoing studies of new, leading-edge therapies and research for new cancer treatments. CCC oncologists study and adopt the latest treatments that offer more hope for effective treatment of numerous cancers.
The National Cancer Institute has awarded Cancer Centers of the Carolinas a research grant and designated CCC as a Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP). Typically, these grants are awarded to hospital-based research institutes. As one of only 63 such research centers in the country to be awarded this grant, CCC provides patients with state-of-the-art cancer care closer to home. In 2008, CCC was the recipient of the prestigious American Society of Clinical Oncology Trials award.

CCC also participates in clinical trials through independent pharmaceutical companies as well as through US Oncology. The affiliation with US Oncology allows CCC to pool the knowledge and experience of a network of over 1,000 cancer specialists throughout the nation. This network constantly studies the best possible treatments for every type of adult cancer.
